Prince Avalanche is a 2013 American comedy-drama film written and directed by David Gordon Green. It stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as two road workers in the summer of 1988 who travel to a remote location in Texas to repaint traffic lines on a highway that had been destroyed by a forest fire.
The film is based on the Icelandic film Either Way (ร annan veg) by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurรฐsson.
As the two men spend their days painting lines on the road, tension builds up between them due to their different personalities and lifestyles. Alvin (Paul Rudd) is a serious and introverted man who takes pride in his work and uses his time in the wilderness to reflect on his troubled relationship with his girlfriend, Lance (Emile Hirsch), on the other hand, is a carefree and outgoing guy who sees his job as a way to escape his problems with his own girlfriend.
As the weeks pass by, the men's bond is tested by their isolation, and they begin to reveal their deeper fears and desires to one another. Meanwhile, they encounter several eccentric characters along the way, including a woman who lives in a nearby trailer park and a truck driver who sells them homemade ice cream.
Prince Avalanche is a mostly quiet and gentle film that explores themes of loneliness, forgiveness, and self-discovery. It received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and screenplay, as well as its beautiful cinematography that captures the beauty of the Texan wilderness.
