In the movie Prancer, Jessica, a young girl living in a small town in Michigan, is struggling to understand how her family will afford Christmas this year. Her father, John, is doing his best to make ends meet with the apple farm, but it's not enough. Despite her mother's doubts and her sister's ridicule, Jessica holds onto her belief in Santa Claus and the magic of Christmas.
One day, while on a walk in the woods, Jessica discovers a reindeer with a injured leg. She immediately assumes that it is Prancer, a beloved reindeer from the town's Christmas display. Jessica takes it upon herself to nurse the reindeer back to health, believing that she can return him to Santa Claus and restore the Christmas spirit to her town.
As Jessica hides Prancer in her family's barn, she faces a number of challenges. Her mother is concerned about the expense of caring for the reindeer, her sister thinks she's crazy, and her father struggles with the decision of what to do with the animal. Meanwhile, the town is preparing for Christmas festivities, and the absence of Prancer from the display is causing concern among the residents.
