After narrowly escaping the clutches of the malevolent spirit known as the Beast in the first Poltergeist film, the Freeling family moves in with Diane's mother in hopes of starting anew. Unfortunately, their problems are far from over.
The Beast has followed them and continues to haunt the family in a number of ways. In one particularly disturbing scene, it takes control of a toy clown and uses it to terrorize young Robbie Freeling. The family also begins to experience strange occurrences such as unexplained noises, objects moving by themselves, and ghostly apparitions.
As the family tries to come to grips with what is happening to them, they are visited by the Reverend Henry Kane, a religious zealot who was responsible for the deaths of his many followers. Kane claims to have been sent by God to lead the family to their ultimate destiny.
Despite their best efforts to resist Kane's influence, the family begins to unravel under the strain of his relentless pursuit of Carol Anne. The situation becomes increasingly dire as the Beast takes control of Diane and tries to use her to kidnap Carol Anne.
In the end, the family is able to overcome their fears and defeat both Kane and the Beast. They are able to move on with their lives, but they are forever changed by the trauma that they endured.
