In the movie, Mewtwo is portrayed as a powerful and intelligent Pokemon who is dissatisfied with its position as a creation and seeks to overthrow its creators. Mewtwo, with the help of Giovanni, the leader of the evil organization Team Rocket, sets out to capture and clone several Pokemon, including Pikachu and the three starter Pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.
Mewtwo creates a tournament to lure the world's best trainers to his island fortress where he plans to pit his clones against their originals in an attempt to prove his supremacy. Ash, Misty, and Brock, along with several other trainers, accept the invitation and travel to the island.
Soon after arriving, however, they realize they have been trapped, and Mewtwo reveals his plan to take over the world and create a new order of Pokemon. A battle ensues between the original Pokemon and their clones, which ultimately results in a confrontation between Mewtwo and Mew, the mythical Pokemon who Mewtwo was cloned from.
The final battle between the two powerful Pokemon creates a massive storm that threatens all life on the planet. As Ash tries to stop the battle and save Mew and Mewtwo, he is turned to stone and seemingly dies. However, the tears of the Pokemon and the love of their trainers brings Ash back to life, and Mewtwo has a change of heart and allows the original and clone Pokemon to live together in peace.
