Plunkett & MacLeane is a historical action-adventure film set in England during the 18th century. It follows the exploits of Will Plunkett (played by Robert Carlyle), a thief with a grudge against the wealthy aristocrats of the era, and Captain James Macleane (played by Jonny Lee Miller), a charming and dashing rogue who has fallen on hard times due to his own aristocratic connections.

The two men meet by chance in a local pub, where Plunkett is passing himself off as a nobleman in order to scam a wealthy patron. Macleane is immediately drawn to Plunkett's criminal savvy and sees an opportunity to profit from their partnership.

Together, the two begin executing daring heists on the wealthy elite of London and soon become known as "The Gentlemen Highwaymen." As their robberies become more audacious and notorious, they draw the attention of Thief Taker General Chance (played by Ken Stott), a ruthless lawman determined to bring them to justice.

However, Macleane's plans are complicated when he falls in love with Lady Rebecca Gibson (played by Liv Tyler), the niece of Lord Chief Justice Gibson (played by Michael Gambon), a powerful figure in the English legal system. As Macleane becomes more deeply entangled with Rebecca, he begins to question whether their criminal lifestyle is worth the risk.

Plunkett & MacLeane is a thrilling adventure full of swashbuckling action, forbidden romance, and political intrigue. Directed by Jake Scott and produced by Working Title Films, it was released in 1999 to positive reviews and was noted for its stylish visuals and charismatic performances.
