The two aging fighters are Cesar Dominguez and Vince Boudreau, played by Antonio Banderas and Woody Harrelson, respectively. They have been best friends for years, but their boxing careers have taken very different paths. Cesar is now a restaurant owner and devoted family man, while Vince has become a womanizing slacker who can barely pay his rent.
When they get the call from the Vegas promoter, they jump at the chance to prove they still have what it takes. However, the trip to Vegas proves to be more challenging than they anticipated. They have to contend with Grace, played by Lolita Davidovich, who has her own complicated history with both men. Along the way, they also encounter a variety of odd characters, including a hitchhiking hippie, a suspicious cop, and a group of boisterous nuns.
Once they finally arrive in Vegas, they have to go through a grueling training session with their old trainer, played by Tom Sizemore. The fight itself is brutal and intense, with both men taking a beating but refusing to back down. In the end, Cesar emerges as the victor, and he goes on to face the middleweight champion in the next big bout.
Despite the physical toll the fight takes on both men, they emerge from the experience with a renewed sense of friendship and camaraderie. The movie ends with them driving back to LA, taking in the beautiful desert scenery and reflecting on their journey. It's a heartwarming and entertaining film that showcases both Banderas and Harrelson's talents as actors.
