Divine's Filth-Fight: Unleashing Baltimore's Underground Revolution

Comedy,Crime  United States of America

"Pink Flamingos" is a 1972 cult film directed, written and produced by John Waters. The film features a cavalcade of bizarre and boundary-pushing scenes, which are meant to shock and repel audiences. The lead character, Divine, real name Harris Glenn Milstead, is portrayed as a raunchy, larger-than-life drag queen, who lives in a trailer park in Baltimore with her mother Edie (Edith Massey).

The central plot involves a feud between Divine and the sadomasochistic couple Connie (Mink Stole) and Raymond Marble (David Lochary), who run an obscene boutique and produce child pornography. They plot to steal the title of "The Filthiest Person Alive" from Divine by performing increasingly outrageous and repugnant acts. Some of the more infamous scenes include Divine eating dog feces, a chicken being killed on camera, and a sexual act between a man and woman with a live chicken.

Despite its scandalous and transgressive content, Pink Flamingos has developed a dedicated cult following over the years, and is now regarded as a landmark of the "Midnight Movie" subgenre. The film also features early appearances by John Waters regulars such as Mary Vivian Pierce, Danny Mills, and Cookie Mueller. In addition to its infamy, Pink Flamingos is also noted for its punk rock soundtrack, which includes songs by The Velvet Underground and Alice Cooper.
