Photograph is a 2019 Indian-American coming-of-age romantic drama film directed by Ritesh Batra. The film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra in lead roles, with Farrukh Jaffar, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Vijay Raaz and Jim Sarbh appearing in supporting roles.
The film follows the story of a struggling street photographer in Mumbai, Rafi, who meets a shy and reserved accounting student named Miloni. After taking her photograph, he convinces her to pose as his fiancée to appease his grandmother's wish to see him settled. As they spend time together, they start to develop a connection and fall in love.
However, Miloni's strict parents have arranged a marriage for her to an eligible groom from a wealthy family. Meanwhile, Rafi's grandmother visits him in Mumbai and wants to meet Miloni, causing him to panic and make a desperate decision to follow Miloni to her hometown. There, they revisit the location where the photograph was taken, hoping to save their fading relationship and prevent Miloni's arranged marriage.
As they travel together, they begin to reflect on their respective pasts, their relationships with their families, and the decisions they have made. The space they revisit echoes their relationship and memories, reminding them of the moments they shared together and the love they developed despite their cultural and societal barriers.
Photograph received critical acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of the protagonists and their relationship, as well as its portrayal of Mumbai as a bustling, colorful city full of contrasts and contradictions. It was premiered at Sundance Film Festival and has won several awards at other international film festivals.
