Phil, played by Greg Kinnear, is a dentist who is going through a mid-life crisis. He is not happy with his life and is struggling with depression. One of his patients, a woman named Michaela, is one of his happiest patients. She always has a smile on her face and seems to enjoy life.
One day, Phil learns that Michaela has committed suicide. This news devastates him and he becomes obsessed with finding out what went wrong. He starts to investigate her life, talking to her friends and family, and begins to uncover a dark and twisted world that he never knew existed.
