Pelle the Conqueror is a 1987 Danish-Swedish drama film directed by Bille August. The film is based on a novel of the same name by Martin Andersen Nexø and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988. The movie tells the story of a Swedish father and son who move to Denmark in the late 19th century to find work and make a better life for themselves.

When Lasse and Pelle arrive on the island of Bornholm, they are greeted by harsh living conditions and a lack of jobs. They eventually find work on a large farm owned by a wealthy farmer named Kongstrup. The farmer is a cruel and abusive man who treats his workers poorly and pays them very little.

Pelle, who is determined to make a better life for himself, decides to learn Danish so that he can assimilate into Danish society. Despite his efforts, he is still seen as an outsider and is often ridiculed by the other workers.

Despite the challenges they face, Lasse and Pelle remain resilient and work hard to build a new life for themselves. They develop a close bond with the other workers on the farm, including a young girl named Anna who becomes Pelle's friend.

Over time, Pelle becomes increasingly disillusioned with the unfair treatment of workers on the farm, and begins to rebel against his oppressors. When Lasse dies, Pelle is forced to confront his own mortality and the harsh realities of life on the farm.

The movie is a powerful portrayal of the struggles and hardships faced by immigrants in a new country. It depicts themes of poverty, discrimination, and the struggle for social justice. Pelle the Conqueror is a gripping film that captures the raw emotion and humanity of the characters, making it a timeless classic.
