Peggy Sue Bodell (Kathleen Turner) is a middle-aged woman who attends her 25th-anniversary high school reunion in the early 1960s. Although she is genuinely happy to see her old friends and relive some of her favorite memories, Peggy Sue is also struggling with her failing marriage to her high school sweetheart, Charlie (Nicolas Cage).
As the night wears on, Peggy Sue suddenly faints and wakes up in her own past - just before she is about to graduate from high school. Despite initially thinking she is dreaming, Peggy Sue soon realizes that she is back in her old life and must find a way to navigate the awkwardness and drama of adolescence once again.
As she relives old memories and reconnects with her old friends, Peggy Sue becomes increasingly aware of how much she has changed since her teenage years. She also begins to question whether she should try to change the course of her life now that she knows what lies ahead.
As Peggy Sue tries to reconcile her present-day knowledge with her past experiences, she also finds herself caught in a love triangle between Charlie and her former flame, Michael Fitzsimmons (Kevin J. O'Connor). With time running out before she must return to her present-day life, Peggy Sue must make some difficult decisions about what she wants her future to hold.
The film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is a wistful but ultimately hopeful meditation on the power of nostalgia, regret, and second chances. It features a standout performance by Turner, who brings depth and nuance to Peggy Sue's journey of self-discovery.
