The Haunting of Nak's Ghost Wife: A Soldier's Tale

Comedy,Romance  Thailand

Pee Mak Phrakanong is a Thai horror-comedy film directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and released in 2013. It is based on the legend of Mae Nak Phra Khanong, a famous ghost story in Thailand.

The film takes place during the early 19th century, when Thailand was still known as Siam. Mak (played by Mario Maurer) is a soldier who is sent to the frontlines to fight against the Burmese. He meets four other soldiers, Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey, who become his best friends.

Meanwhile, Mak's wife Nak (played by Davika Hoorne) is pregnant and living in their home in Phra Khanong. She has her neighbor, Chai, to assist her with the delivery as Mak is not present.

After the war ends, Mak returns home with his friends. They are amazed by Nak's beauty and charm, but the villagers start to gossip about her being a ghost. Nak seems to be too perfect and doesn't appear to eat or drink, leading the villagers to believe that she is actually a ghost. Despite her strange behavior and the rumors, Mak refuses to believe that his wife is anything other than alive.

As the film progresses, strange events occur, and the audience learns about Nak's tragic fate. She died during childbirth, but her love for Mak was so strong that she did not move on to the afterlife. She continues to reside in their home, waiting for Mak's return.

The film blends romance, comedy, and horror together to create a unique viewing experience. Pee Mak Phrakanong was a commercial success in Thailand and became one of the highest-grossing films in Thai history. It also received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, praising its humor, scares, and emotional depth.
