Pearl Harbor is a 2001 war film directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film is set in the period leading up to and during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The main characters are Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett), who are best friends and both serve as fighter pilots in the US Army Air Corps.
Rafe and Danny meet Evelyn Johnson (played by Kate Beckinsale) at a local WWII military hospital where they have both been assigned. Rafe falls in love with Evelyn, and after Danny helps him court her, Rafe is soon sent away on a mission to fight in the Battle of Britain. During his absence, it is implied that Danny and Evelyn develop feelings for each other.
After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Rafe is reported dead, and Danny and Evelyn console each other. However, Rafe is actually alive and returns to Pearl Harbor, leading to a confrontation with Danny and a rekindling of his relationship with Evelyn. Meanwhile, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declares war on Japan, prompting both Rafe and Danny to participate in the retaliatory raid on Tokyo.
