Patriot Games is a 1992 American action thriller film directed by Phillip Noyce and based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. The movie stars Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, a former CIA analyst who is forced to come out of retirement when he interferes with an IRA assassination attempt while on vacation in London.
After thwarting the attack and killing one of the terrorists, Ryan becomes the target of a renegade faction of the IRA who vow revenge. Led by Sean Miller (played by Sean Bean), the group is determined to get revenge on Ryan and his family. The conflict escalates when Miller and his men storm the Ryans' home in Maryland, kidnapping Ryan's wife and daughter.
Ryan teams up with his former boss (played by James Earl Jones) and other CIA agents to track down Miller and rescue his family.
