Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is a 1973 Western film directed by Sam Peckinpah and stars James Coburn as Pat Garrett, Kris Kristofferson as Billy the Kid, and Bob Dylan as Alias. The film is set in New Mexico in the 1880s and follows a fictionalized account of the conflict between Pat Garrett, a former friend of Billy the Kid, and the infamous outlaw.
The film was infamous for its production troubles, including clashes between Peckinpah and the studio over the film's length and original ending. The film was ultimately released with a different ending than the one Peckinpah had originally planned.
The film features a score by Bob Dylan, who also appears in a small role as Alias, a mysterious drifter who befriends Billy. The film also features notable supporting performances from Richard Jaeckel, Slim Pickens, and Jason Robards.
