The movie Past Lives follows the lives of two childhood friends, Ji-hyun and Min-seo, who are separated after Min-seo's family emigrates from South Korea to the United States. Despite staying in touch initially, they eventually lose touch and drift apart.
Two decades later, Ji-hyun, now a successful businesswoman, travels to New York for a work trip and is coincidentally reunited with Min-seo, who now works as a struggling artist. Over the course of a week, they catch up on each other's lives and reminisce about their past.
As they spend time together, they find themselves confronting their own notions of destiny, love, and the choices that have made their lives what they are today. Ji-hyun is torn between her successful career and a loveless marriage, while Min-seo's struggles as an artist have left her feeling unfulfilled.
Their reunion forces them to reexamine the choices they've made and contemplate the paths not taken. As the week comes to an end, they must decide whether to rekindle their friendship and take a chance on a different future.
