The spacecraft, named the Avalon, is on a 120-year journey to colonize a new planet called Homestead II. The passengers and crew are in hibernation pods for the duration of the trip, but a malfunction causes two pods to open prematurely.
The two passengers are Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, and Aurora Lane, a journalist. They are initially confused and disoriented, not understanding why they have been woken up so early. They soon discover that the ship has suffered a critical malfunction and that they are the only ones awake. The ship's systems are failing, and they must work together to try to fix it before it's too late.
As they spend time together, Jim and Aurora develop a romantic relationship. However, Jim struggles with the guilt of waking Aurora up and keeping the truth about their situation from her. He eventually confesses, causing a rift between them.
As the ship continues to deteriorate, they discover that there is a way to fix it, but it requires Jim to sacrifice himself. He volunteers to do so, and Aurora is devastated. However, she eventually forgives him and helps to carry out the plan.
In the end, the ship is repaired, and the passengers are awakened on schedule. Jim is hailed as a hero for saving the ship, but he chooses to stay behind on the now habitable Homestead II, where he can live out the rest of his days with Aurora.
