Artie and Diane, played by Billy Crystal and Bette Midler, are excited to spend time with their three grandkids while their parents, Alice and Phil, go out of town for work. However, things quickly become challenging as Artie and Diane's babysitting style clashes with Alice and Phil's modern, overprotective parenting methods. The children, Harper, Turner, and Barker, are used to having every aspect of their lives micromanaged by their parents and struggle to adjust to Artie and Diane's more relaxed approach. Meanwhile, Artie and Diane also struggle to adapt to the 21st-century behavior of their grandkids, including social media, video games, and a lack of manners.

One of the main issues causing tension is Harper's upcoming ballet recital, which Artie and Diane insist on attending, despite Alice and Phil's request that they stay home and watch the live stream. Artie also takes it upon himself to coach Turner's little league team using outdated methods, much to the chagrin of the other parents and coaches. Meanwhile, Barker, who has a speech impediment, finds solace in Artie's encouragement and support.

As the week goes on, both the grandkids and grandparents learn valuable lessons about each other's generations and find common ground. The children learn about respect, communication, and the importance of family traditions, while Artie and Diane come to understand the pressures and anxieties of modern-day parenting. In the end, everyone comes together for Harper's recital, where the family finally learns to appreciate each other's strengths.
