Paper Spiders is a moving and poignant drama that follows the story of Melanie, a high school senior, who is trying to navigate her teenage years in the shadow of her mother Joan's mental illness.
Melanie's life begins to get complicated when her father passes away, and her mother's erratic behavior starts to escalate. She becomes increasingly paranoid, convinced that their neighbors are threatening her. Melanie tries everything to get her mom the help she needs, including reaching out to a kind-hearted neighbor, Lacy, for support.
As Melanie prepares for college and plans her future, she discovers that her mom's condition is much worse than she thought, and she begins to realize that she may have to choose between living her own life and being there for her mother.
The movie is beautifully directed by Inon Shampanier and features fantastic performances by Lili Taylor and Stefania LaVie Owen. It is a touching and realistic portrayal of the challenges that come with growing up in the shadow of mental illness.
