In Painted Skin: The Resurrection, the story follows the demon Xiaowei, who has been trapped in a painting for centuries. She manipulates a man named General Wang Sheng into freeing her by offering to use her powers to save his life. Xiaowei is then taken in by a wealthy family and starts to develop feelings for the family's eldest son, Zhang Sheng.
However, Xiaowei's true intentions are revealed when she tries to steal the heart of a pure-hearted young woman in order to become mortal.
