Padmaavat is a highly controversial Indian movie that was released in 2018. It is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions. The movie is based on the epic poem Padmavat, written in the 16th century by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi.
The story of Padmaavat revolves around the queen of Mewar, Padmavati, who is renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and courage. She is married to Ratan Singh, the king of Mewar, and they live a peaceful life in their kingdom.
However, their peaceful life is disrupted when the tyrannical sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khilji, learns about Padmavati's beauty and becomes obsessed with her. He decides to attack Mewar and capture Padmavati for himself.
King Ratan Singh and his army put up a strong defense against Khilji's forces, but they are eventually defeated. Khilji then demands that Padmavati be handed over to him, but Ratan Singh refuses to give her away.
In the meantime, Padmavati and Ratan Singh hatch a plan to defeat Khilji. They decide to perform Jauhar, a traditional Rajput ritual where women and children immolate themselves to avoid capture and enslavement.
The movie ends with a heartbreaking scene of Padmavati, Ratan Singh, and their people committing Jauhar. Khilji, on the other hand, is shown to be defeated but not before causing immense destruction and killing many innocent lives.
Padmaavat was highly controversial due to its depiction of Rajput culture and historical inaccuracies. The movie faced protests, threats, and violence from various groups, leading to it being banned in some Indian states. However, it still managed to become one of the highest-grossing Indian movies of all time.
