Pacific Rim is a science-fiction action movie directed by Guillermo del Toro and released in 2013. The movie is set in a future world where Kaiju, massive and powerful monsters, emerge from a dimensional portal in the Pacific Ocean. As the Kaiju seemingly grow stronger and more frequent, humanity pools together resources to construct giant robots called Jaegers (German for "hunters") to combat the threat.
The Jaegers are controlled by two pilots inside a neural bridge that allows them to move in perfect synchronization, using a shared pool of memories and emotional responses. The pilots must also be compatible in terms of mental and emotional strength, as the process of controlling a Jaeger is traumatic and often leads to mental instability or side effects.
The movie follows the journey of Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), a former Jaeger pilot who retired after his brother was killed in a failed mission, and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), an untested young pilot who has a personal connection to the Kaiju. The two are paired together to pilot the legendary Jaeger Gipsy Danger, one of the few remaining Jaegers still operational.
As the Kaiju continue to evolve and become more powerful, the human forces struggle to keep up, and tensions rise as the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Along the way, Raleigh and Mako must confront their own personal demons and fears while facing some of the toughest challenges of their lives.
The movie features a diverse cast of characters, including Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost, the leader of the Jaeger program, and Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as a pair of eccentric scientists researching the Kaiju.
