Oscar Diggs, played by James Franco, is a selfish and womanizing magician in a traveling circus. He is transported to Oz by a tornado, where he meets Theodora (Mila Kunis) and is convinced by her that he is the wizard prophesied to defeat the wicked witch and save Oz. Along the way, he also meets and befriends a talking winged monkey named Finley (voiced by Zach Braff) and a china doll named China Girl (voiced by Joey King).
However, once in Oz, Oscar realizes the gravity of his predicament and the danger that Oz is under the influence of the wicked witches, Theodora and her sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz). With the help of Glinda the Good Witch (Michelle Williams), Oscar sets out on a dangerous journey to defeat the witches and save Oz.
Throughout the movie, Oscar also confronts his own character flaws and undergoes a personal transformation, gradually living up to the ideals of a true hero, rather than just a charlatan. Additionally, the film features stunning visuals and special effects, as well as references to the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.
