In the movie, Henry becomes so devastated after his fiancée's accident that he can't even bring himself to leave the house. At the urging of his sister Chloe, he agrees to visit psychic Ashley, hoping for some kind of closure or comfort. Ashley instantly connects with Henry and seems to have a genuine gift for communicating with the dead, so she agrees to help him. She tells him that Kate is watching over him and wants him to move on, and Henry is initially skeptical but gradually starts to open up to her.
As Ashley delves more deeply into Kate's diary, she realizes that she's actually falling in love with Henry herself. This puts her in direct conflict with Kate's ghost, who sees her as a threat. Kate begins to haunt Ashley and Henry, trying to drive a wedge between them. She also enlists the help of a handsome ghost named Dan, who has a vendetta against Ashley and tries to sabotage her at every turn.
The tension between Ashley and Kate's ghost builds to a dramatic confrontation, in which Henry must choose between the past and the present, between the woman he lost and the one who's right in front of him. Will Ashley be able to win over Henry's heart, or will Kate's ghost succeed in keeping them apart forever? The movie is a romantic comedy with moments of silly humor, and it offers a unique perspective on the afterlife and the power of love.
