Lauren Ames (played by Shelley Long) and Sandy Brozinsky (played by Bette Midler) are two very different actresses who are about to begin studying with the renowned acting teacher, Stanislav Korzenowski (played by Robert Prosky). Lauren is reserved and classically trained, while Sandy is loud and brash, with a focus on comedic roles.
On their first day of class, Lauren and Sandy clash immediately, with Sandy disrupting the serious atmosphere of the class. However, when they both discover that they are dating the same man, Michael Sanders (played by Peter Coyote), they reluctantly team up to track him down and get some answers.
Their quest takes them from New York to the deserts of New Mexico, and even to a dangerous encounter with some Middle Eastern terrorists. Along the way, Lauren and Sandy learn to appreciate each other's strengths and form an unlikely friendship.
As it turns out, Michael is not who he seems - he is actually a double agent working for the CIA. When he is finally caught and brought to justice, Lauren and Sandy are able to put their differences aside and move on with their lives.
Outrageous Fortune was a hit comedy when it was released in 1987, and is remembered for the hilarious performances by Long and Midler. The film was directed by Arthur Hiller and written by Leslie Dixon.
