Charlie and Herb are struggling financially and are both single. Charlie comes up with the idea to embark on a luxury cruise to meet rich, lonely women who might be interested in them. Herb is hesitant at first, but Charlie manages to persuade him with promises of free food and drinks, as well as the opportunity to visit exotic locations.
Once on board, Charlie and Herb meet the tyrannical cruise director, Gil Godwyn (Brent Spiner), who assigns them as dance hosts for the single women on the ship. Despite their lack of dance skills, Charlie and Herb manage to charm some of the women, including the beautiful Liz (Dyan Cannon) and the kind-hearted Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).
However, things take a turn for the worse when Gil discovers that Charlie and Herb are not professional dance hosts and threatens to kick them off the ship if they don't improve their skills. In order to save their positions, they seek help from the ship's dance instructor, Gabriella (Rue McClanahan), and practice tirelessly.
Throughout the rest of the cruise, Charlie and Herb encounter various mishaps and hilarious situations, including mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and a grand performance at the ship's dance competition.
In the end, while Charlie and Herb have managed to make some new friends and even find a potential love interest or two, they both realize that true happiness comes from reconnecting with family and loved ones, rather than chasing after wealth and luxury.
