Out of the Past is a film noir classic that was released in 1947. Jeff Bailey is the protagonist of the movie, played by Robert Mitchum, and he used to be a private investigator in New York City. Jeff had been hired by a man named Whit Sterling, who wanted Jeff to find his girlfriend, Kathie Moffat, played by Jane Greer. Jeff and Kathie fell in love during their investigation, and Jeff eventually discovered that Kathie had killed Whit and stolen a large sum of money. Jeff helped her to escape and disappeared with her, but their relationship didn't last long.
Back in the present day, Jeff is living in Bridgeport, California, under the name of Jeff Markham, and has left his past behind. He is dating Ann Miller, played by Virginia Huston, and runs a gas station. But a man named Joe Stefanos, played by Paul Valentine, arrives in town and starts asking questions about Jeff. Joe is working for Kathie, who wants Jeff to help her steal a tax evasion document from Whit Sterling, who is still alive.
Jeff initially resists the temptation to return to his former life, but eventually agrees to help Kathie. They meet in Acapulco and plan the heist, which goes wrong when Whit is killed. Jeff and Kathie escape with the document, and Kathie betrays Jeff by shooting him and running off with the money. Jeff survives the gunshot wound and tracks Kathie down, killing her in a Mexican resort town. Jeff returns to Bridgeport, and it's left open whether he will be able to settle down with Ann or if the past will continue to haunt him.
