Kate and John, a married couple, adopt Esther, a 9-year-old girl, after losing their baby. Soon after her arrival, strange events begin to occur, and Kate becomes suspicious of Esther when she witnesses her engaging in disturbing behavior.
As time goes on, the couple begins to uncover Esther's dark and twisted past, realizing that she is not actually a child at all, but a 33-year-old woman named Leena who suffers from hypopituitarism, a condition that stunted her growth and caused her to look like a child.
Leena has a history of violence and manipulation, having killed several previous families who adopted her. She sets her sights on John, seducing him and plotting to frame Kate for her own murder.
In a thrilling climax, Kate and John manage to expose Leena's true identity and put an end to her reign of terror, but not without enduring a painful and traumatic experience.
