Lost Friend, Uncovering Dark Secrets

The movie Ordinary People is actually a 1980 drama directed by Robert Redford and written by Alvin Sargent. It stars Donald Sutherland as the gym teacher, Calvin Jarrett, and Mary Tyler Moore as his wife, Beth. The female student, Conrad's classmate and friend, is named Jeannine Pratt (played by Elizabeth McGovern).

The story begins with Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton), the couple's teenage son, returning home from a psychiatric hospital after attempting to commit suicide. Conrad struggles to cope with the guilt and trauma of surviving a boating accident that claimed the life of his older brother, Buck. Meanwhile, his parents are dealing with their own emotional turmoil and distant relationship.

One day, Jeannine comes to Conrad's house looking for her friend Karen, who has gone missing. Conrad and Jeannine go looking for her, but as they investigate, they uncover disturbing secrets about Karen's life and past. They realize that her disappearance is connected to a larger conspiracy involving Karen's dysfunctional family and their attempts to hide their secrets.

As Calvin and Jeannine continue to search for Karen, they also begin to understand the depth of Conrad's emotional turmoil and the root of his depression. The movie explores themes of grief, family dynamics, mental illness, and the importance of communication and connection.

Ordinary People won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Alvin Sargent. It is a poignant and powerful drama that portrays the struggles and complexities of ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances.
