Ordet

Drama  Denmark

Ordet is a 1955 Danish film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. It is based on a play by Danish playwright Kaj Munk.

The film's protagonist is Morten Borgen, a devout farmer who lives in a small Danish village in the 1920s. His wife has died, and he is left to raise his three sons alone. The youngest son, Anders, shares his father's religious faith and is studying to become a pastor. The eldest son, Mikkel, has lost his faith and is estranged from his family. The middle son, Johannes, has become delusional and proclaims that he is Jesus Christ.

The film explores the conflicting beliefs and values of the family members, as well as the tensions between them. Morten is a devout Christian who believes in the power of prayer. He is convinced that praying for his daughter-in-law, Inger, will save her life during a difficult childbirth. However, Mikkel and Johannes are skeptical, and they clash with their father over their differing beliefs.

The film builds up to a tense climax as Inger's labor becomes increasingly difficult, and tensions rise between the family members. Ultimately, the film's resolution proves to be a powerful affirmation of faith and the power of prayer.

Ordet is widely regarded as a masterpiece of world cinema, and is considered one of the greatest films ever made. The film's themes of faith, doubt, and the search for meaning continue to resonate with audiences today.
