Onward, a movie from Disney and Pixar, tells the story of Ian and Barley Lightfoot, two teenage elf brothers living in a suburban fantasy world. The brothers come from a family of magic but they have grown up in a time where technology has replaced magic and forgotten the practice. Their father, who passed away before Ian was born, was a wizard. Ian, who is nerdy and shy, is about to turn 16 and is hoping to get to know his dad better. Barley, who is older, is more outgoing and is obsessed with solving a mystical quest.
However on his 16th birthday, their mother Laurel surprises them with a gift from their late father. It's a magical staff that can bring him back for 24 hours only. But the spell goes wrong and they only bring back half of their father, his legs. To complete the spell, they need to embark on a quest and find a magical stone that can bring back the rest of their father.
The journey takes them through an enchanted forest filled with fantastic creatures like pixies, trolls, unicorns who all have modern jobs such as trash collectors, baristas or casual employees in the mall. As the brothers venture on this journey, they encounter obstacles, unexpected allies and the realization that there's still a little magic left in the world if you know where to look for it.
Onward is a heart-warming and adventurous movie that explores themes of loss, family and the importance of embracing your differences.
