Only When I Laugh is a 1981 comedy-drama film directed by Glenn Jordan. It stars Marsha Mason as Georgia Hines, an actress and recovering alcoholic who has just completed a 12-week rehabilitation program for her addiction. As she tries to navigate her new life outside of rehab, Georgia is faced with the challenge of staying sober while dealing with the problems of her best friends Toby (Joan Hackett) and Jimmy (James Coco) as well as her needy daughter Polly (Kristy McNichol).

Georgia, who is known for her wit and sarcasm, quickly learns that returning to work in the theater world is not as easy as she thought. She struggles to land a good role, but eventually gets a job in a play where she must play a character similar to her real-life self. The play becomes an intense emotional outlet for Georgia, as she must confront her past and the struggles that led her to alcoholism.
