Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a 2003 action film directed by Robert Rodriguez. It is the third and final installment of the "Mariachi" trilogy, following El Mariachi and Desperado.
In the film, El Mariachi (played by Antonio Banderas) is recruited by CIA agent Sands (played by Johnny Depp) to assassinate corrupt Mexican General Marquez (played by Gerardo Vigil).
As El Mariachi goes about his mission, he becomes entangled in a complex web of international espionage, double-crosses, and betrayals. Along the way, he meets an ex-FBI agent (played by Ruben Blades), a beautiful revolutionary leader (played by Eva Mendes), and a young boy who seeks revenge on the general for the death of his father.
Sands, meanwhile, has his own agenda, which involves manipulating and exploiting both El Mariachi and the general for his own purposes.
The film features stunning action sequences, intricate plot twists, and a host of memorable characters. It was praised for its visual style, performances, and ambitious scope, even as some critics found its plot confusing and convoluted.
