The fourth installment of the Once Upon a Time in China series takes place in 1895, during a time of political turmoil in China. Wong Fei Hung, played by Jet Li, is a respected martial artist and physician who is called upon to deal with both foreign threats and internal conflicts.

Along the way, he must also confront his own conflicted feelings about his role in Chinese society and his relationship with the foreign missionaries.
