In Once Upon a Time in China and America, Jet Li reprises his role as legendary martial arts master, Wong Fei-hung, who travels to the United States to visit his disciple, So Chan. So has left China to open a martial arts school in America, hoping to spread traditional Chinese culture and discipline among the Chinese immigrants.
Upon his arrival, Wong Fei-hung soon realizes that his disciple is facing many challenges and dangers in the new land. The Chinese immigrants are being exploited and abused by the white Americans, who see them as cheap labor and are afraid of being competed out of work. The Chinese workers are forced to work under inhuman conditions, with low pay and long hours, and are often subject to racial discrimination, violence, and harassment.
So's martial arts school becomes a refuge and a source of hope for the Chinese immigrants, who look up to him as a leader and protector. However, his success and influence in the community also attracts the attention of the American mob, who wants to exploit his reputation and skills for their own purposes. So is caught in a dangerous game of power and greed, and he eventually realizes that he needs Wong Fei-hung's guidance and support to survive in this hostile environment.
Wong Fei-hung comes to So's aid, and together they face a series of challenges and foes, culminating in a final showdown against a powerful American gangster who wants to take over the Chinese neighborhood. The movie portrays the clash between the Chinese and American cultures, highlighting the values of honor, respect, and discipline that lie at the heart of traditional martial arts. It also shows the courage and resilience of the Chinese immigrants, who have to fight against injustice and oppression to realize their dreams and aspirations in a foreign land.
