Once In The Desert is a Russian war drama, directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. The film was released in 2017 and became the first Russian feature to be shot in Syria. It stars Mariya Mironova, Yuriy Borisov, and Irina Kupchenko.

The story begins with a team of Syrian EOD experts, who are tasked with clearing the ancient city of Palmyra of explosive devices left behind by ISIS militants. The team is led by a young captain, played by Borisov, who is determined to complete the mission and hold a symbolic concert of the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra in Palmyra.

As the team moves deeper into the city, they encounter more difficulties, including booby traps and ambushes by ISIS militants. The tension between the captain and the more experienced sapper, played by Mironova, begins to escalate as they face increasing danger.

Despite their differences, the team perseveres, meticulously defusing one explosive device after another. However, when the captain goes missing during an ambush, the sapper takes charge, risking her own life to search for him in the war-torn city.

The film provides a gripping portrayal of the realities of war, highlighting the bravery of those who risk their lives to protect others. Once In The Desert also draws attention to the cultural destruction wrought by ISIS militants in Syria and the importance of preserving heritage sites in times of conflict.
