On Guard is a French swashbuckling adventure film directed by Philippe de Broca and released in 1997. The film is based on the novel "The Bossu" by Paul Féval and stars Daniel Auteuil as Henri de Lagardère, a skilled swordsman who seeks revenge for his friend, the Duke of Nevers, who was assassinated by the Duke's cousin, Guise.
Henri becomes the protector of the Duke's surviving daughter, Aurore, who is next in line for the inheritance. Henri poses as a theatre actor to get close to Guise and his cohorts and to foil their plans to seize the fortune. Along the way, Henri also falls in love with Aurore and must navigate the treacherous world of aristocracy to protect her life and her rights to the Nevers estate.
The film features dramatic sword fights, witty dialogue, and elaborate costumes and sets that transport viewers back to 17th century France. It received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards, including the César Award for Best Costume Design.
