After the White House is captured by the terrorist mastermind Kang, played by Rick Yune, Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler, manages to evade capture and strategize on how to save the President. Banning, who was removed from his position as a Presidential guard after failing to save the First Lady in a previous accident, is determined to redeem himself and protect President Benjamin Asher, played by Aaron Eckhart.
Banning quickly realizes that the terrorists are not only after the President, but also have access to the nation's nuclear launch codes. With time running out, Banning works with the acting head of the Secret Service, played by Angela Bassett, and other government officials to develop a plan to retake the White House and rescue the President.
As the terrorists begin to execute their plan to launch America's nuclear arsenal, Banning infiltrates the White House and engages in intense hand-to-hand combat with the well-trained enemy forces. Despite facing overwhelming odds, Banning's knowledge of the building's layout and security protocols allows him to outwit the terrorists and stay one step ahead.
