Oliver & Company is a 1988 American animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is loosely based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, but the setting and characters have been changed to 1980s New York City where Oliver is a kitten instead of a human boy.
Oliver is a stubborn and independent kitten who is left alone in the streets of New York City to fend for himself. After finding some friendly strays led by the charismatic Dodger, Oliver soon becomes part of a gang of dogs, including tough-but-lovable Tito, who is always ready to pick a fight, and comical Francis, a bulldog who loves Shakespeare. Their adventures lead them into conflict with their greedy human owner Fagin, who uses the animals as pickpockets and thieves to pay off his debts to the villainous Sykes.
One day, while engaged in a heist, Oliver meets a kind-hearted girl named Jenny and her poodle Georgette, who take him in and begin to show him a life of love and luxury. Oliver is torn between his loyalty to his canine friends and his new-found love and comforts. Meanwhile, Sykes demands Fagin retrieve an expensive diamond that Jenny's father, a wealthy businessman, has acquired as collateral. Fagin uses Oliver as leverage to get the diamond, leading to a dramatic finale on a busy New York bridge.
Oliver & Company features a lively musical score, with songs written by various popular artists of the time, including Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, and Bette Midler. The film was a box office success and received positive reviews for its animation, music, and voice cast, which includes Joey Lawrence as Oliver and Billy Joel as Dodger.
