Lena Doyle, played by Faye Dunaway, is a tough and independent woman who inherited her late husband's oil business in Oklahoma. She is determined to find oil on her land, even though the major oil companies in the area are pressuring her to sell.
Lena's father, Cleon, played by John Mills, is a former oil man who now helps his daughter run the business. They are joined by a drifter named Mase, played by George C. Scott, who becomes Lena's love interest.
