Of Love and Shadows is a drama film directed by Betty Kaplan, and released in 1994. It is based on the novel of the same name by Isabel Allende. The film stars Antonio Banderas as Francisco, Jennifer Connelly as Irene and many other skilled actors of international fame.

The movie is set in the 1970s in Chile, a country that is under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Irene is a magazine editor who is unhappy with her life. She lives with her wealthy journalist husband Gustavo (Diego Wallraff), but their marriage lacks love and passion. Francisco enters Irene's life when he comes to her for a job as a photographer. He is charming, handsome, and passionate, and Irene is immediately attracted to him. She hires him, and they begin to work together on a story about a group of people who have gone missing. As they work together, Francisco opens Irene's eyes to the atrocities being committed by Pinochet's regime. They become involved in the underground resistance movement, which puts them both in danger.

As Irene becomes more involved in the resistance movement, she begins to find a new sense of purpose and freedom. She falls in love with Francisco, and they develop a romantic and passionate relationship despite the danger they face. Gustavo also becomes more involved in the resistance movement, and he has suspicions about Irene and Francisco. The tension between the characters builds throughout the movie, and the climax occurs when they are captured by the secret police.
