Odiyan is a Malayalam-language fantasy action drama film, directed by V. A. Shrikumar Menon and produced by Antony Perumbavoor. The film stars Mohanlal in the lead role, and Manju Warrier and Prakash Raj in supporting roles.
The film is set in the 1950s and 1960s, and tells the story of the Odiyan clan from the Palakkad-Malabar region of Kerala, who possess supernatural powers to assume animal form. The Odiyans, who were once feared and respected, find it difficult to survive in the new world of electricity brought by the British rule, as they are ruthlessly captured and killed by the British.
Mohanlal plays the last surviving Odiyan, Manickan, who is forced to abandon his powers to save his clan following a personal tragedy. When the British return to the village, seeking to capture and kill Manickan and his kin, he uses his cunning and stealth attacks to save his clan.
The film is noted for its stunning cinematography, visual effects and action sequences. It also features Manju Warrier in a strong supporting role as Prabhavati, the love interest of Manickan, and Prakash Raj as the villainous Ravunni Menon, a British army officer who is determined to exterminate the Odiyans.
Odiyan was released in December 2018 and was a commercial success at the box office. It was also praised for its depiction of the Odiyan clan, a little-known community in Kerala folklore, and for bringing an ancient tradition to the mainstream.
