Charlie is a librarian in New York City who has learned to avoid anything that brings him joy, as it triggers his narcolepsy. He has a supportive sister, Liza, who is aware of his condition and helps him navigate his routine. Charlie meets Francesca, an Italian woman who just moved to the city, and they quickly fall for each other. As they get closer, Charlie struggles to keep his condition a secret from her and is forced to confront the limitations that his disease places on his happiness. Meanwhile, Liza is dealing with her own romantic issues and realizes that she may not be as supportive of Charlie's relationship as she thought. The film explores themes of living with a disability, the complexities of love, and the sacrifices we make for happiness.
