The Divided Score

Crime,Thriller,Drama  United States of America

Odds Against Tomorrow is a 1959 crime film directed by Robert Wise. David Burke (played by Ed Begley) is an ex-convict who hatches a plan to rob a bank with his two partners: Johnny Ingram (played by Harry Belafonte), a nightclub performer, and Earl Slater (played by Robert Ryan), a racist former police officer.

The planning process is tense, as Slater expresses his discomfort with working with a black man, and his racist attitude creates friction between the three men. Ingram, who is black, finds Slater's comments offensive and tries to keep things civil.

As they prepare for the heist, the tensions between the three men escalate. In the end, the heist goes wrong, and the three men are forced to turn on each other, with tragic consequences.

Odds Against Tomorrow was notable for tackling issues of race at a time when few Hollywood films did so. It was also one of the first films to feature a black actor as a co-lead in a mainstream Hollywood movie. The film was critically acclaimed and received nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards.
