Oculus

Horror  United States of America

Oculus is a horror movie directed by Mike Flanagan, released in 2013. The film revolves around a woman named Kaylie Russell (played by Karen Gillan) who is determined to exonerate her brother, Tim (played by Brenton Thwaites), who was convicted of murdering their parents 11 years ago. Kaylie believes that the true culprit is a supernatural entity that resides within a mirror owned by her family.

Kaylie tracks down the mirror, which was sold at an auction, and brings it back to their childhood home to prove that it was responsible for their parents' deaths. She sets up cameras and a complex system of alarms to document the mirror's behavior and to protect herself and her brother from its malevolent influence.

As the night progresses, Kaylie and Tim are faced with horrifying apparitions and illusions, which challenge their grip on reality. They begin to question whether the events they are experiencing are real or just a figment of their imagination. The story jumps between present-day and flashbacks of the events leading up to their parents' death, providing insight into the psychological toll the mirror has taken on their family.

In the end, Kaylie's plan to prove her brother's innocence goes awry, and she becomes consumed by the same madness that drove her parents to their deaths. The film leaves viewers questioning whether the supernatural entity was real or simply a manifestation of the characters' deepest fears and insecurities.
