The movie, directed by Joe Johnston and released in 1999, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam, the protagonist of the story. Homer is a teenager growing up in the small town of Coalwood, West Virginia, in the late 1950s, where the main employer is the coal mine.
