Lost Souls: A Forbidden Love

Drama,Romance  South Korea

Oasis is a South Korean movie directed by Lee Chang-dong and released in 2002. The film stars Sol Kyung-gu as Jong-du, a young man who has just been released from prison after serving a sentence for a hit-and-run accident that killed a motorcyclist. Upon his release, he goes to visit the victim's family to apologize and offer his condolences.

There, he meets the victim's widow, Gong-ju (played by Moon So-ri), and her daughter, Gong-joo (played by Ahn Nae-sang). Gong-joo is wheelchair-bound and has cerebral palsy, which makes her unable to move or communicate properly. Despite this, Jong-du is drawn to her and the two begin spending time together.

As he spends time with Gong-joo, Jong-du begins to understand her world and sees the injustice of her situation. Her family is often neglectful and treats her poorly, making it hard for Jong-du to watch her suffer. Taking matters into his own hands, Jong-du tries to make life better for Gong-joo by bringing her small gifts, taking her on adventures, and even convincing her family to sign her up for physical therapy and speech classes.

As their unlikely relationship deepens, the two begin to fall in love despite their differences. However, their families, society, and their own personal struggles threaten to tear them apart. Gong-ju's family is outraged by Jong-du's presence, while Jong-du's own family is embarrassed by his relationship with a disabled woman.

Oasis is a poignant and powerful film that explores themes of love, redemption, and the meaning of disability. It was critically acclaimed upon release, winning over 20 awards at various film festivals around the world.
