The movie Not That Funny revolves around a struggling comedian named Bobby (Tony Hale), who is experiencing a career setback after his popular TV show gets canceled. Despite his failed career, Bobby has a loving girlfriend named Lucy (Emily Hampshire) who appreciates his softer and sentimental side. However, Lucy longs for a partner who can make her laugh and sweep her off her feet.
Bobby becomes determined to make Lucy laugh. In the process, he meets an eccentric woman named Kristin (Anne Dudek) who encourages him to improvise and unleash his inner comedian. Kristin initially serves as Bobby's muse and mentor, but as Bobby becomes increasingly immersed in his comedic pursuits, he begins to neglect Lucy.
Lucy becomes frustrated by Bobby's growing fixation on comedy and feels that their relationship is falling apart. Bobby's attempts to make Lucy laugh with his new comedic skills are not working, and Lucy starts to question whether she chose the right partner. In the meantime, Kristin's encouragement leads Bobby to embark on a new career opportunity, which takes him off to a new city.

In the end, Bobby and Lucy reconcile and find a way to balance their respective wants and needs.
