In the movie, Jake Wyler, the stud quarterback, makes a bet with his friends that he could turn Janey Briggs, the school's resident "ugly duckling," into the prom queen. The catch is that Janey is not interested in popularity and is much more focused on her art.
Throughout the movie, Jake tries various tactics to make Janey popular, including sending her on a shopping spree worthy of the hottest girls in school, giving her a makeover, and planning a big reveal at prom. Meanwhile, Janey begins to see through Jake's motives and falls for the quirky yet sweet Ricky, who stands by her side despite her unpopularity.
