The struggling publisher, Tom Duval, is desperate to keep his publishing house from going under. His only successful author, Jane Lockhart, has written a bestseller that has been adapted into a movie and has launched her career into the stratosphere. However, Jane has become too content with her newfound success and can't seem to write anything new.
Tom hatches a plan to make Jane miserable, believing that her unhappiness will reignite her creativity and allow her to write another great novel. He tries various tactics, from sabotaging her relationships to making her hate her home, but nothing seems to be working.
As Jane becomes more and more unhappy, Tom begins to realize that he has feelings for her. He struggles with balancing his love for her with his desire for her to be miserable so that she can write another successful book.
The film is set in Glasgow, Scotland, and features stunning Scottish scenery. It is a romantic comedy with plenty of humor and heart, and features solid performances from Karen Gillan (Jane) and Stanley Weber (Tom).
